Ecuador is a birdwatcher´s wonderland!

Nature is an essential component of all tourist routes in Ecuador, and is the country´s main attraction. Apart from general nature lovers, there are many visitors who have a keen interest in one of Ecuador´s many natural wonders such as orchids, birds , insects and more.

The East side of the Andes mountains stretch into Amazon Rainforest Basin, the world´s largest rainforest.

Birdwatching

There are from 1400 to 1500 species of birds in Ecuador. Nobody knows for certain how many there are, but there are more than twice as many species in Ecuador than in all of North America. In fact, in 1998 a new species of the Antpitta family was discovered --a bird which barks like a dog and hoots like an owl. The lodges in the eastern rainforests rapidly compile lists of the number of species encountered in their neighbourhood. According to this unofficial competition, they are about to exceed 600 in one of our lodge´s reserves!

But you don't have to go so far as the rainforest for excellent birding:

"Galápagos: Islands of Birds!"

Two renowned birdwatching sites on the western slopes of the Andes are only 2.5 hours from Quito; another, in the protected area of the volcano Pasochoa, east of Quito.

But really, everywhere is a birdwatching site in Ecuador!!!
